High Availability

BarTender Cloud provides 99.9% service availability, as defined in their Service Level Agreement.

BarTender Cloud’s architecture and management operations are designed from the ground up with state-of-the-art cloud and computing technology and best practices to deliver secure and scalable cloud-based services.

BarTender Cloud uses multiple redundant clusters of nodes (and not just a single server) to deploy customers allowing automatical scaling of resources based on demand. The cloud-based solution also ensures that customer and system data is continuously backed up and replicated with automated failover in place, guaranteeing minimal disruptions and downtime for the customer.

BarTender Cloud, along with its customer data, is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s most comprehensive and widely used cloud platform.

Health Monitoring

BarTender Cloud’s architecture integrates industry-leading tools such as Amazon CloudWatch. These tools ensure continuous monitoring of the network, application, and system and provide resource optimisation to maintain operational health. BarTender’s technical teams also keep an eye on the system for security threats and vulnerabilities while also ensuring performance and scalability.

Maintenance and Updates

BarTender regularly releases updates to address issues and incorporate feature enhancements and improvements. Before deployment, each release goes through a defined process to ensure the highest level of quality.

Disaster Recovery

Disasters are unpredictable and can cause loss of customer data. To protect from such occurrences and minimise their impact, BarTender Cloud has measures in place.

Seagull Scientific’s technical teams have a comprehensive disaster recovery plan to recover and restore customer data from regular data backups to resume service.

Data Retention

BarTender Cloud stores customer data, including stored label template files, for as long as the customer is active in the system. If the BarTender Cloud account expires, the customer data is retained for up to 90 days, after which the data will be deleted.

Activity History is stored for a maximum of one year for the Essential Plan and indefinite for the Automation Plan as long as the BarTender Cloud account is still active. It is important to note that activity history log storage is part of the overall account storage size.

Layered Security

BarTender Cloud prioritises security, focusing on preventing unauthorised access and protecting customer data. This is achieved through the combined efforts of the Engineering, DevOps, and Security teams, who work together to identify and mitigate risks, implement best practices, and constantly develop new ways to enhance security.

BarTender Cloud provides secure data storage through its multi-layered security controls, including physical, logical, technical, and administrative measures. These security measures are incorporated in every aspect of the platform, from its architecture to its implementation, deployment, and ongoing management.

Network Security and Server Hardening

BarTender Cloud has a system architecture that divides its systems into separate networks to safeguard sensitive data. The systems responsible for testing and development tasks are hosted in a different network than the systems responsible for BarTender Cloud’s production infrastructure.

All servers in Seagull Scientific’s BarTender Cloud production environment are hardened, which means that all unnecessary is disabled (e.g., disabling unnecessary ports, removing default passwords, etc.). A base configuration image is also applied to ensure consistency throughout the environment.

BarTender Cloud’s production environment is not directly accessible from the open Internet and is restricted with a limited number of production servers available.

Network security measures are incorporated into the software and system architecture of BarTender Cloud. These measures include firewalls, role-based access controls (RBAC), intrusion detection, and other access restriction techniques.

Moreover, VPN tunnelling and public key authentication or randomly generated passwords are used to prevent unauthorised privileged access.

Security Compliance

BarTender Cloud pays special attention to security compliance and keeps its security controls under constant surveillance through monitoring, auditing, and enhancing the design and operating effectiveness of security controls.

The constant surveillance is performed by both third-party credentialed assessors and BarTender Cloud’s internal technical teams. The feedback and the results are are promptly communicated to the senior management, and all identified issues resolved in a timely manner.

BarTender Cloud is hosted on AWS and upholds more security standards and compliance certifications than any other on-demand cloud computing platform, including PCI-DSS, HIPAA/HITECH, FedRAMP, GDPR, FIPS 140-2, and NIST 800-171.

Database Security

BarTender Cloud hosts each customer’s data in its shared infrastructure, logically separating it from any other customer data. This separation ensures that the customer’s data integrity is maintained and the data is only accessible by the concerned customer.

BarTender Cloud production environment’s database servers are safeguarded with the help of AWS data centres. These data centres provide the latest physical protection for the BarTender Cloud servers and infrastructure.

Data Encryption

BarTender Cloud ensures maximum security of customer data by encrypting both data in transit and data at rest throughout its system architecture.

Data in Transit

BarTender Cloud uses strong encryption protocols to transmit data between BarTender Cloud clients and the BarTender Cloud service. All data traffic transmitted between the two is encrypted using the latest recommended secure cypher suites, including AES256 encryption, RSA and Elliptic Curve DSA, and SHA384 signatures.

Data at Rest

All data at rest in BarTender Cloud’s production network is encrypted with FIPS 140-2 compliant encryption standards. This applies to all data types, including databases, file stores, and backups.

All encryption keys are stored securely on a separate network with very limited access. Seagull Scientific has taken necessary precautions and implemented safeguards to protect the creation, storage, retrieval, and destruction of secrets such as encryption keys and service account credentials.

API Security

BarTender Cloud provides programmatic access via the BarTender REST API. REST APIs are a modern and efficient way for applications and systems to communicate and exchange data with each other over the network or the Internet.

The BarTender REST API is secured by an API gateway and a Security API. To gain access to the REST API, users and applications need valid authentication credentials such as an access token or standard OAuth protocols and providers. This ensures that only authenticated users and applications can access the API.

Internal Tests

BarTender Cloud utilises proven software practices that have been developed over the past 30 years with BarTender software to ensure the highest quality and security. These include robust software principles, design, and hybrid agile development techniques such as Scrum and test-driven development (TDD). The company also perform code reviews, comprehensive unit, regression, and integration testing to ensure established coding standards and security are met.

Third-Party Security Assessments

Apart from BarTender’s compliance audits, the company conducts annual application-level and infrastructure-level penetration tests using independent entities. These independent entities use OWASP Testing Guide, a web application security standard from the non-profit organisation called Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP).
