The MC9400 is the latest edition of the best-selling MC9000 series mobile computers, which first debuted in 2003. The MC9400 barcode scanner is the successor to the MC9300, with enhanced capabilities that meet the evolving demands of today’s workforce.

The Zebra MC9400 is designed with unparalleled durability. It can withstand drops from up to 12 feet onto concrete and is resistant to extreme temperatures, making it the most resilient barcode scanner in its class. It is also rated to withstand dust and water exposure and can work reliably even in challenging conditions.

A Qualcomm 4490 octa-core processor powers the MC9400 and has a 4.3-inch WVGA display with Corning® Gorilla® Glass. The display delivers exceptional clarity and responsiveness. 

Its SE58 Extended Range Scan Engine with IntelliFocus™ technology enables efficient barcode scanning from close range to over 100 feet, offering unmatched versatility for diverse applications.

The Zebra MC9400 handheld computer supports Wi-Fi 6E and 5G connectivity, streamlining operations in warehousing, logistics, and manufacturing industries by keeping workers connected.

Variants

The Zebra MC9400 barcode scanner comes in three variants to suit specific applications:Standard Variant: Suitable for general-purpose tasks such as inventory management and retail operations.

  • Freezer Variant: Designed for cold storage, ideal for environments like frozen warehousing, distribution, and cold-chain management.
  • Non-Incendive Variant: Built for hazardous environments, making it suitable for oil, gas, and chemical manufacturing sectors.

 

Each variant can be easily identified by its distinct colour accents:

  • The Freezer Variant has blue bezels around the display and a dedicated freezer battery with blue bumpers and latches.
  • The Non-Incendive Variant has orange bezels and a battery compartment with orange bumpers and latches.

Physical Overview

The Zebra MC9400 is a handheld mobile computer with a pistol grip form factor, designed for comfortable, one-handed use. Its balanced design enhances user comfort, making it a highly ergonomic choice among mobile computers.

Front View

The front of the Zebra MC9400 houses a durable 4.3-inch colour touchscreen display with Corning® Gorilla® Glass. Corning® Gorilla® Glass scratch and impact proof.

An ambient light sensor above the display adjusts brightness automatically, providing clear visibility even in direct sunlight.

Premium models have a front-facing camera for capturing images and videos to support communication and data collection.

Just below the display, an LED notification bar provides visual indicators for various statuses like:

  • Battery charging level
  • Notifications generated by apps
  • Data capture confirmations

 

Beneath the notification bar is the backlit alphanumeric keypad. The backlighting makes it easy to use in low-light environments.

On the keypad, you’ll find additional features such as:

Side View

The left side of the Zebra MC9400 has a speaker for audio output. The audio output is used for notifications, video playback, and other audio functions.

Battery release latches are located on both the left and right sides. Pressing both latches simultaneously allows the battery to be easily removed from the device.

The MC9400’s display is protected by Corning® Gorilla® Glass, a strengthened glass known for its resistance to scratches and shattering, making it ideal for rugged use.

The Zebra MC9400 model has been rigorously drop-tested according to MIL-STD-810H standards, a U.S. military standard that ensures products meet strict durability requirements. As a result, the MC9400 can withstand drops on hard surfaces over a wide temperature range.

Here are the drop specifications for the MC9400:

  • Can withstand drops from 12 ft (3.65 m) onto concrete at room temperature.
  • Resistant to drops from 8 ft (2.4 m) to concrete across a wide range of temperatures.

 

The MC9400 adheres to IEC sealing standards and has IP67 and IP65 ratings. The IP67 rating certifies that the device can withstand submersion in up to 1 metre (3.28 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes without harm. The IP65 rating ensures that the device is completely dust-tight and resistant to low-pressure water jets from all directions.

Beyond drop and water resistance, the MC9400 is designed to endure tumbles, vibrations, thermal shocks, and electrostatic discharge (ESD), meeting the highest standards for reliability in demanding work environments.

The MC9400 is available in standard, freezer, and non-incendive models:

  • The freezer model includes a heated touch panel, scanner exit window, and a freezer-rated battery for reliable performance in sub-zero conditions.
  • The Class 1 Div 2 non-incendive model is certified for safe use in areas with flammable gases or hazardous materials.

 

This device is built to endure 2,000 tumbles from 3.3 ft. (1 m), simulating frequent handling in industrial settings. 

The handheld device operates reliably within a temperature range of -4°F to 122°F (-20°C to 50°C) and endures humidity levels from 5% to 95% non-condensing.

Additionally, its Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection guards against static electricity, tolerating up to ±15kV air discharge and ±8kV direct discharge.
